
Based on the judging criteria set forth below, entries will be judged by the AAFilmLab and a Final Judging Panel. One (1) Grand Prize Winner, Two (2) Finalist Prize Winners, the Top 10 Films, and Individual Award winners will be announced at the Shootout Awards Ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 13th as part of the Asian American International Film Festival.
Judging, Criteria, Voting and Winner Selection
Judging will consist of two juried rounds based on numerical scoring. The Round One Judging Panel will consist of the AAFL 72 Hour Shootout Staff. Entries will be judged based on filmmaking ability, production value, originality, successful incorporation of the theme, and overall creativity. Out of the original submission pool, the Top 15 films will be selected to advance to the final round of judging. In addition, the Round One Judging Panel will nominate up to 5 films or persons for each of the individual award categories.
The Final Judging Panel (Round 2) will select the Top 10 Films, One (1) Grand Prize Winner, and Two (2) Finalist Prize Winners. Entries will be judged based on filming ability, production value, originality, successful incorporation of the theme, and overall creativity. All Individual Awards will be determined by the Final Judging Panel.

RANDALL PARK was born and raised in Los Angeles. He is an actor, writer, stand up comedian, filmmaker, columnist and occasional radio commentator. Some of Randall’s work can be seen at www.randallparkplace.com. He is currently working on the Nickelodeon show “Supah Ninjas”, with one of his personal heroes, George Takei. Randall’s favorite rap group is the Clipse. Randall currently lives in Mars Vista, California with his lovely and talented wife, Jae.
RIK CORDERO is an award winning independent music video, commercial, and film director of Filipino descent. He was born and raised in Queens, NY and is known for applying unusual, non-traditional shooting methods in his work. The Fader has proclaimed his music videos as miracles while the wildly popular Hip Hop blog Nah Right has called him the only Hip Hop video director on the planet. Cordero was nominated for Video Director Of The Year at the 2009 BET Awards and was the recipient of the 2009 Best Film Award for his feature film, “Inside A Change” which made its world premiere at the 2009 HBO New York International Latino Film Festival. In 2010, Cordero was seen in Sprite’s print and television ads for their “Spark” campaign. The ads featured him as a Hollywood director discovering inspiration in very unlikely ways. He recently wrapped his latest feature “Starla,” a thriller executive produced by Chris Robinson and “The World is Watching,” a documentary about the culture of New York City high school basketball produced by Nike and narrated by Spike Lee.
PHIL YU is the blogger behind AngryAsianMan.com, a popular Asian American news/culture website. Building a steady loyal readership since 2001, the Washington Post calls the blog “a daily must-read for the media-savvy, socially conscious, pop-cultured Asian American.” Phil’s commentary has been featured and quoted in stories for the Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, CNN and more. Phil worked previously at the Center for Asian American Media in San Francisco and currently serves on the boards of Visual Communications and Projekt Newspeak in Los Angeles.
MARCI PHILLIPS is the Executive Director of Primetime Casting for ABC Entertainment and is responsible for covering the entire East Coast talent pool for their shows. For well over a decade, Marci has cast for ABC and ABC Studio pilots, new series regulars, TV movies and alternative series.Marci previously worked for Steven Bochco Productions and MGM Studios. She cast the independent film “Let It Snow” which was featured at Sundance and co-produced the musical comedy “Moo! The Twisted Tale of Dinky Farms” at MTS. Marci was an active member of the Advisory Board for The Aspen Comedy Festival for nine years. She was voted “Favorite NY TV/Film Casting Director” in the 2009 Backstage readers poll and tied in 2007.
IRIS YAMASHITA was nominated for an Academy Award® for her first produced screenplay, “Letters from Iwo Jima”. Directed by Clint Eastwood, “Letters from Iwo Jima” received a Golden Globe award for “Best Foreign Language Film” and was nominated for 4 Oscars®. Currently, she is in development on an original script to be directed by Shekhar Kapur, who previously directed “Elizabeth” and “The Four Feathers”

DENNIS LIU graduated from The Taft School and NYU with a major in film. He began his career assisting producers at major advertising agencies such as BBDO and Saatchi & Saatchi. At 23, his breakout piece, “Apple Mac Music Video,” quickly raked in a million hits on YouTube in a matter of days, landing him a spot on the @radical.media director roster. It was made for $100. In 2008, he won The People’s Choice Award in the Cannes New Director’s Showcase. He’s received nods from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, SHOOT, ‘boards, creativity-online.com, AICP (MOMA), Adcolor, Pixar, and The One Show. In 2009-2010, millions of people watched his videos for Microsoft Office, Bing, AT&T, and other leading tech companies nationally and virally online. As a music video director he has directed videos for renowned artists such as David Guetta, Diane Birch, Sia, Kyle Andrews, and Michael Jackson. Currently, he’s working on a science fiction, action short film, PLURALITY, written by Ryan Condal.
MYNETTE LOUIE A New York-based independent film producer, Mynette Louie produced Tze Chun’s CHILDREN OF INVENTION (Sundance 2009, 17 fest awards), co-produced Andrew Bujalski’s MUTUAL APPRECIATION (Top 10 films of 2006—EW, Village Voice, Film Comment, Artforum, etc.), and is currently in post-production, pre-production, and development on several narrative feature projects. Louie was a fellow of the 2008 Rotterdam Lab, 2009 Sundance Creative Producing Lab, and 2010 Berlinale Talent Campus. She is on the Program Advisory Board of the IFP and the Selection Advisory Committee for the Sundance Labs, was named by Ted Hope as one of “21 Brave Thinkers Of Truly Free Film,” and frequently serves as a mentor and panelist for organizations such as IFP, Film Independent, Tribeca Film Institute, and indieWIRE. Mynette previously worked at the Hawaii Film Office, where she authored the state’s production tax credit, and in business development and marketing at SportsIllustrated.com, Jupiter Research, and Time Magazine. A native New Yorker, Mynette graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University with a B.A. in East Asian Studies, focusing on Chinese literature and film.
SINSU CO is a trained actor from the distinguished New York University, a singer/songwriter in the recording studio, a model with international experience & appeal, and a TV personality from MTV’s Paris Hilton’s My New BFF. She most recently booked the shoot for Yves Saint Laurent’s new campaign, and stars in an upcoming feature The End of Our Lives. Some of her past works include the JCPenney campaign, superhero in comic book Silicone Allie, billboards across the U.S, Hong Kong & Taiwan, guest on Tyra Banks Show, and a cameo on CNN. She is part of the new breed of multi-tasking artists and an advocate of educating & empowering the youth of today. She hopes to keep partaking in meaningful films & projects and currently resides in New York when not on location.
JASON POLLARD’s introduction to film began at an early age through his parents. His mother, Glenda’s love for film exposed Jason to a variety of genres such as American and French classics, blaxploitation and independent cinema. Jason would often accompany his father, acclaimed film producer\editor Sam Pollard, to the editing room and watch as his father magically turned strips of celluloid into complex and wonderful stories. As a result of their influence, Jason studied film at New York University. In 2007 he coedited the critically acclaimed Pete Seeger: The Power of Song” which was nominated for the Motion Picture Producer of the Year Award and received the Christopher Award in 2009, as well as premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. Jason has collaborated with his father, Sam, for the History Channel’s documentary Black Preachers (2005). He edited a short narrative God’s Hand (2004), which was an official Tribeca Film Festival selection in the urban short narrative category. Jason has received a degree in Bachelors in Fine Arts in Film & Television and a Masters in Cinema Studies, both from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is completing his first project as a producer on the short film, Their Eyes Were Watching Gummy Bears. Jason currently resides in New Jersey with his wife, Nicole.
